Thread: Mandolin

    Default Mandolin

My great uncle was a session musician back in the day and recently passed away. But he left to us a mandolin that he told us Jimmi Hendrix played and gave him but we have no provenance with it and it's not signed and we are unsure what to do with it. Can anyone advise us please. Thanks

It would help to know what kind of mandolin it is, maybe a pic.

Hang it on the wall and tell the story. It's a family heirloom, and a conversation piece. Unless it turns out to be a valuable instrument, without a provenance that's pretty much all you've got. Even if it has some collector's value, it'd be better off with you and your family. And you could always learn how to play it.

But please take a couple of photos and post them. That will give the experts here some idea of its market value. Any identifying features, and also indicators of its condition, that's what's most needed.

    Get it checked for fingerprints?

I’ve got an Ashbury octave mandolin that Prince gave me, the more I think about it.
    I’d never sell it... probably.

You do need to post a picture of the instrument and knowing your uncle's name would help as well. Even with a picture showing Jimi playing the mandolin that isn't going to really add much if anything to the value.

To be fair to history, and accuracy, and Jimi, it's "Jimi." Thank you.

I wonder if he was ever knighted. Although I doubt he ever renounced his American citizenship and embraced British citizenship, he is perceived by some to have been a British musician. Would he have been Sir James, or Sir Jimi?

Settling in Seattle in 1940, he and his wife, Lucille Jeter, had son Johnny Allen in 1942. When Mr. Hendrix returned from military service in Atlanta several years later, he renamed his son James Marshall Hendrix.

After his divorce from Lucille, who died in 1957, Mr. Hendrix raised Jimmy, as James was called then, and his half-brother Leon as a single father.

Mr. Hendrix gave Jimmy an old ukulele as a toy, followed by a $5 acoustic guitar and soon after, a used electric. Jimmy taught himself to play by ear and later dropped out of high school to tour with bands and develop his new technique. He also changed the spelling of his first name to Jimi.
He's buried in Renton, Washngton. He was a Northwest native.

Here’s the link to the Newbies social group, you’re very welcome to join, along with your mandolin which probably really wants to be played.

Yeah, I know. Just killing time, waiting for the OP to ring in again ...

Some Brits have tried to claim him as theirs: British manager - Chas Chandler of The Animals - brought him to London in September 1966, teamed him with two British musicians, recorded his first album at Olympic Studios in London, had two singles out in the UK before going to the Monterey Festival, he died there, and other factors. I don't think he himself ever considered himself British, though.

I had my biggest compliment a week ago when playing with a band I hadn't played with for a couple years. We were playing a benefit and when we finished I was told I was the Jimi Hendrix of the mandolin. That was a pretty high compliment that I don't know if I am worthy of, but very much enjoyed hearing.

That is high praise, indeed. But it's erroneous. It's well-known that's actually me. (I am resisting the temptation to post that dang video yet again.)

Nope. Jimi died in the days before rich "anti-establishment" rock stars were knighted. And I'm pretty sure he never took out British citizenship. In Canada, a person has to renounce Canadian citiizenship to get a knighthood or similar honour from a foreign government. In the US too, I'd assume. (Jimi had a Canadian connection by the way: https://www.insidevancouver.ca/2013/...en-for-summer/)
Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

Pops! - Congratulations on the compliment! Did you play your mandolin with your teeth then set it on fire?

Thankfully no, I need to keep what teeth I have left, and I would never think of setting my Brentrup on fire. Guess my fingers were on fire. The heat of the fire helps the pain of old fingers. haha
