Default Beginner - Hoping to get more into chord work

    Hey all,

I'm quite new at the mandolin, and I'm really hoping to learn some more songs which use a lot of chords.

my primary focus on mandolin is punk and rock, but I'm very willing to learn well, everything really.

Do you guys have any good songs or lessons which would help me learn some chord heavy songs?

    thanks,

Like, you just want to change chords all the time…

I dont know any punk mando tunes but you could look at jazz tunes, they generally have alot of chords - All the things you are comes to mind.

You can always set up ur own thing too, take a standard 1 4 5 tune and add walk ups, relative minor, etc…

Let’s say a standard tune in G like Blue Ridge Cabin Home, 2 measures each of G C D then G

Sub the relative minor chords, when going from C to D play a C C# D walk up, play inversions, play double stops…I know you said you were new to mando so if you don’t know inversions, double stops, etc then work on them.

After you have G down try A, then D, etc…should keep you busy for a lifetime really.

Don’t worry about it sounding funky, you’re the only one who gets to decide if it sounds good

    As another newbie...nine months now...
All songs are “chord heavy” if all you’re playing are chords
Pretty much all of my playing so far is playing the chords and singing, with some intro or outtro picking.
They vary from super easy two- or three-chord songs to ones that give a real workout. Mostly I just look up an online search for the song title I want and “chords” and pick among the options that pop up for a key and chord progression that sounds right. Some that will pop up online have errors, or are written for a capoed guitar, so pick and choose and transpose as needed. If you have a specific one you have a question about let me know. Here are some that I’ve memorized so far...

    Amarillo by Morning
    Modern Day Romance
    Tequila Sunrise
    An American Dream
I can’t Help Falling In Love
    Toes
    Remember When
    Dance Little Jean
    Feliz Navidad
    Amie
    Ripplin’ Waters
    Wagon Wheel
    The Walk
    Love, Me
With a Little Help From My Friends
    All of Me
    Country Roads
    Leavin’ On a Jet Plane
    Lyin’ Eyes
    Long Hard Road (Sharecroppers Dream)
    Picture
Son of a Son of a Sailor
    Blues Man
    A Pirate Looks at 40
    Much Too Young
    He Went to Paris
    Mary Jane’s Last Dance
    Hallelujah
    Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door

Also wanted to add... there’s a social group for us newbies, with some very kind and judgment-free folks who are currently or have recently gone through the same learning curve you are. Check it out by clicking on the Social Groups tab at the top of the page.

Here are couple recent things I’ll point to, not performances, just chording examples of a couple tunes:
