Now, what was I after when I wandered in here?

    I's just 'bout to say.

It's not like "route," which can go either way. And I don't mean there and back.

Exactly. Even if I pronounce "bout" like the boxing match, I'm not saying it the way an American does. I'd also question whether Americans from the deep South, the Bronx, upstate New York, and the Midwest pronounce "bout" the same way, let alone people from England, Scotland, Australia, and South Africa. A linguist could do a thesis on this topic.
Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

I'm sure several theses have been done on those differences.

And can we please not discuss what rhymes with "theses"?

We should at least make sure everyone understands the question concerns the bout and not the butt.

As we digress more deeply into this silly word world of what rhymes with what, and bad puns I'm beginning to feel right at home. I offer this poem:

    All the houses were blue
    And a beautiful hue
But the doors were all orange
And so were the door hinge

"So were the door hinge" makes me cringe!

I suggest: "And so was each door hinge."

But that edit throws the meter off . . . and gives us a half-rhyme. What can you do with "sporange," the only true rhyme in English with orange? It's part of a fern (but not the kind of fern I asked about last week! The kind that grows in the earth.)

Ha, I don't think so, Sheila. I hate to get technical, but the singular is:

    spo·ran·gi·um (spə-răn′jē-əm)
    n. pl. spo·ran·gi·a (-jē-ə)
A single-celled or many-celled structure in which spores are produced, especially in fungi, algae, mosses, and ferns. Also called spore case.

And here's another question? Is a half rhyme truly a rhyme?

I think species and fleecies are the only true rhymes in CarlM's list.

That is one of the reasons I put question marks. I think a good argument could be made for decease as a full rhyme but the accent is slightly different.

Next you will be telling us "condos made of stoneya" does not rhyme with Babylonia.

There should be a hillbilly song in all of this.

Take it up with hudmister. My edit corrects the mismatch between plural verb and singular noun only, maintaining the meter as presented. The alleged half-rhyme, too. He's on his own with those. Though as far as I'm concerned, if I actually were his editor, I'd let the rhyme pass, for humor's sake.

Oh, Spencer, Spencer, Spencer. My husband and I had a good chuckle over your question (and for a second there, I wondered what "chuckle" rhymes with, but then "buckle" came to mind almost instantly. Hardly any fun in that). I think 'bout stuff like this all the time. If you don't believe me I might have to give you the boot. Which rhymes with moot, one of whose meanings is, "deprived of practical significance."

I dunno, Sue, I find "sporange" in the dictionary as a singular noun:
    https://www.macmillandictionary.com/...rican/sporange

What rhymes, fully, partially, on the slant or straight up, is eternally contestible. I'd rather be picking than dickering

And finer question marks I have never seen. If you're sugggesting I might challenge the lyrical stylings of Steve Martin, I might have to challenge you to a bout! But I'm not that kind of girl. I think we are one corncob pipe short of a hillbilly song. You don't happen to have one, do you?

This turned out to be quite a thread. Started with next to nothing, and has spun out to include ... so much!

Q: How many mandolinists does it take to answer a question?
A: Oh, just two or three ... plus however many want to add their viewpoints, perspectives, insights, experiences, and random 2˘.

You never know where threads might go
One might learn a rhyme for "orange"
And tangents may roam far away
