    Default Sixties Music

The Mama's & Papa's, Loving Spoonful, Beach Boys, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, Bob Dylan, Poco, Joni Mitchell, Donovan, Jessie Colin Young etc and then you have all the great blues, folk, british invasion on and on

There's a ton of great songs of that ere that the mandolin can bring a new life to...All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey. I've been for a walk on a winters day...cool tune with an acoustic to accompany

Yes, great songs from that era. How about you posting a video of you playing one, CB?

I really enjoy the 60's music you mention. I especially gravitate to the Byrds, Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman's own application of the mandolin, and the many others that moved their Country music closer to rock or rock closer to country depending on your perspective. A few years back I was invited by friends to participate in a Gram Parsons tribute in Gainesville, Florida. The timing worked out for me as the tribute coincided with our Snow Bird travels to Florida digs.
It was a lot of fun and now has me planning a post pandemic 3 set gig. Each set a tribute starting with Gram Parsons, 2nd set undecided but perhaps the Everly Brothers, and the third set Hank Sr.

I like to play Little Deuce Coup by the Beach Boys like a folk old timey song. It works really well. I use the Dm A7 Dm A7 G as the intro and turn around.

The reason for the uncertainty with an Everly Brothers set comes down to our inability to do the harmonies justice.

I should mention that this endeavor is a new type of experience for me. My musician friends are encouraging me.

I play "The Letter" with a bunch of sus-2s thrown in. Rocks awesome. And speaking of M&P's John Philips, the Dead's version of his "Me and My Uncle" is a hoot, to boot.

Tim O'Brien did an entire album, Red on Blonde of Bob Dylan's songs.

Sam Bush often plays "Girl from the North Country" either solo or with Jerry Douglas.

Further out, there's Psychograss's version of Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun," with Mike Marshall on mando,Tony Trischka on bowed banjo, and Darol Anger notechecking various pieces.

Yup, lots of musical territory to mandoexplore!

NO GUITAR on either track. Mando does the job instead.

I'm still blown away every time I hear that PG&F version of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." Grier and Flinner do phenomenal solos on that all the way through!

    Yup, yup, and yup.
Neil young, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.
Those are what I’m learning/playing now.
They sound great on the mandolin.
(Don’t hold that against me.) Hehe. To each his or her own, as they say.

Did the 60s only happen in the USA? In my world, most of the music came from Liverpool, UK. Does anyone remember a little known band (or “group” as they were then known) called the Beatles?

Also, don't forget the British Invasion. Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers - a lot of cool stuff happening across the pond in the mid-60s.
All my life I wanted to be somebody, now I realize I should have been more specific.
