My reaction, too. Yeah, back in the day on Haight Street, before I was entrusted with a mandolin. Makes me recall my infant daughter peeing on Jerry Garcia.

If you want to sell your mandolin, put it in the Classifieds. No selling instruments on the discussion board.

Hi, I see this thread is very old, but I was wondering about the Owsley that I have, I was told that it is the first scroll top top made by Jim Owsley, it’s labeled with a hand typed label “SN 0022”, just wondering anyone has any history on something so unique? My friend played it for many years and has since given it to me, and I want to make an offer to him, so I’m just trying to seek appraisal, I guess. Do you have any suggestions? I’m attaching a photo of the label, Jim Owsley, Hayes Virginia Ser. 0022 1975. What I was told is he thought the scroll was copyright protected by Gibson. I play it all the time, it’s priceless to me, I just want to offer something for it.

I have number 0005 from 1963. Bought it from Jimmy in 1977. It's basically a round sound hole A with two points on each side. It is labeled Coke, Virginia which is a smaller section of Hayes in Gloucester, Virginia

I own #0005 (1963). I bought it from Jimmy at his shop in Gloucester in 1977. A friend of mine bought one of his F around the same time. Years later he was having some neck work done on it and the luthier found a made in Korea stamp somewhere in the neck joint. He was slick enough to buy Asian imports and modify them to his specs.

I love his aesthetic. Do you think he called it "The Ouch-sley" with all those pointy parts? It sort of reminds me of these old style map-shaped mandolins:
