Thread: '98 Weber Gallatin - what's original?

    Question '98 Weber Gallatin - what's original?

    Hello,

I bought this '98 Weber Gallatin that has a few scratches and dings and I'd like to restore it. I have tried calling Weber but haven't been able to reach anyone knowledgeable (which is surprising because I've heard of others doing this. Anyway, I have two questions for the pros out there:

    1) Is this tailpiece original?
It looks old but there are a few signs that it's been removed or is maybe a replacement

    2) What finish was used on this mandolin?
Lacquer, shellac, varnish, poly, other? I want to match it when I dropfill the dings. I know some folks use glue but I prefer original.

I think you'd be better off contacting Bruce and Mary Weber. Her email is on the Montana Lutherie website. I don't know if any of the employees of the current company were with it in 1998.

Send it to Bruce and Mary and have them go over it.

Just curious, original tailpiece? I’ve a ‘99 with the cast ‘W’ tailpiece which I assumed was added later. I thought early Webers had the Gibson style tailpiece like yours before switching to the cast one, but wasn’t sure for how long.

Bruce said the tailpiece is not original but he also sent a pic of one from '97 and it's stamped metal like this one but with a different design. I'm not sure when they switched to cast but quite possible it was after '99. At least some of them were cast by '03.

Oh, I now see the extra hole next to tailpiece!
    Nice looking mandolin! Enjoy!
