Thread: Bindings and strings.

  1. #1

    Question Bindings and strings.

My father started stripping his 1937 Kay Kraft Guitar with Spruce top and Mahogany sides and backing back in the mid 70's and never got the chance to finish it. I finally got around to finishing the job in his honor and it came out beautiful. Does anyone know the exact size binding for the sides and neck? Also, could use some recommendations for strings.

You can use calipers or a good engineering ruler to measure as with wood shrinkage it is unlikely to be a standard size. It is generally safer to go with lower tension strings on older guitars.

Bindings are installed oversize and then cut down to size after they are in place so you just have to make sure they are big enough to start with... and you install them before completing the job of preparing for finish. When you say you've "finished the job" does that mean the job of stripping the finish or applying the new finish? If the former, you can still install new bindings, if the later it is too late to install bindings correctly.
