Default Need Help by transpose a Song

    Hi everyone,

I tried to transpose the "Castlejam" form Guitar Tabs to mandolin Tabs. But I failed. Can someone here transpose the following Guitar tabs to mandolin tabs? That would be great.

Welcome to MandolinCafe Phileus, you could maybe post a YouTube clip of the song. Maybe if someone likes it they would get motivated to do some work on it.

For you I imagine, the easiest thing is to just learn the scale of G major, the two octaves, and then learn all the chords for G major - Aminor, Bminor, C major, D major E minor and maybe F# diminished. Then work out a very simple melody line for your song and include chords or double stops along the way.
    Above all , think mandolin.
    Good luck!

What Simon said, especially his "very simple" comment. So first, just find the melody.

A factor in arranging for different instruments is the convenience (or lack!) of adding supporting chord tones, so don't even think about duplicating the full guitar harmony as stated; there won't be enough strings, or long enough fingers, to do it sucessfully. OTOH, mandolin does lend itself to playing underlying, and often unfretted, drone strings, which could give exactly the atmosphere you're looking for.

So after finding the simple lead melody, look at the supporting notes in the guitar tab and see which ones fall easily to hand on mandolin. It's probably easier than you think, AND would be way educational.

BTW: The instruction to "capo at second fret" is a red herring as the tabs & chords are stated relative to the end of the vibrating strings regardless of capo or not. The capo would, I presume, let you match the pitch of the original recording, not critical for casual listening or playing. Unless / until you need to play along w/ the recording, I'd ignore any capo-ishness.

Thank you for the feedback. I tried the ways to "listen" to the sounds, but i failed. I love this song and I want to play it the next time. Maybe some one could help me to transpose the three Intro Lines. Than i would have a start for the rest of the tabs?

A notation version of this song exists on the “music muse” app. Arranged for piano...could easily be played on mandolin.

Oops I didn’t notice the capo instruction.
So the first vid above, he plays it in A, so if you want to play along, just add two frets to all the chords above ie. it’s in G +2=A major. The first chord is Am +2=Bm next, C+2=D etc. A is a good scale to learn by heart too.

Musescore is something you’re going to have to learn anyway. It’s fun and an incredible resource.
In the desktop Musescore program you need to transcribe the tune at the link above into the key you want, say G or A, then add a new instrument, ‘mandolin tab’ then copy the top piano line and paste it into the new mandolin line. That way you get TAB, or of course learn to read the piano notation on the mandolin, another thing you’re going to have to learn but it will pay you back a thousand times!

Oh the last instruction about Musescore is once you have the TAB you post it on MandolinCafe! (It’s a nice melody)

The MuseScore version has a midi file, if downloaded can be imported into Tabledit and transposed to mandolin tab. I think you have to subscribe or join MuseScore for free trial, to get the midi. If you don’t have Tabledit or know how to do that, I can transcribe it with a midi file either from MuseScore or other source. Tabledit can also import ABC files.

Amandalyn that would be great if you could post the abc text file.
It’s one of the most horribly addictive tunes I’ve heard, I love it Got to learn and move on!
-unfortunately my laptop’s down so I can’t get it from Musescore.

Maybe someone can create an "Mandolin only" tab?
