Thread: Eastman MD614 vs. Kentucky KM670

Default Eastman MD614 vs. Kentucky KM670

Still searching for a F style oval.

Recently saw a listing for a Kentucky KM670.

Seems both have a fatter neck and radiused fingerboard. I like that.

Major differences between the Eastman seem to be a rosewood fingerboard, installed pickup and a bit less appointments.

My main concerns are playability and sound. Will be using this in an amplified setting.

Never played a Kentucky, and the Eastmans I have tried left me underwhelmed.especially in a 1K price range.

Curious is anyone has had opportunity and/or experience with both brands.

I just posted a question about the Kentucky KM-670. But I think I may have posted it in the wrong section (General info). I can see no one has responded. Probably because the KM-670 is a newer model for Kentucky. I too am between the Kentucky and the Eastman. I like ebony boards but I am not crazy about the Eastman 614 block inlays..

I would ask The Mandolin Store their opinion. As Joseph P said, the KM-670 is very new. Have not seen or heard one in the wild except for the video from TMS.

Just to note, the Kentucky has a more modern or hybrid style with the fingerboard joining the body around the 15th fret while the Eastman has the fingerboard neck joint at the 12th fret like the old Gibson models. Neither is better. But if you're playing higher up the neck you might prefer the Kentucky.

Sorry I can't add anything further, would normally say Kentucky has a more v shaped neck as opposed to the rounder shape of Eastman, but I don't know that to be the case for this Kentucky model. Either would be good.

That helps. I am leaning towards the Kentucky.

This landed in the classifieds today...

It looks interesting, I would like to try one some time.

One minor gripe, the ad says "highly figured maple back and sides", I see no figure in that back what so ever.

You could go with a 514 or even a 314 Eastman model if you don't need a pickup. Then it becomes more of a question of price rather than appointments.
