    Here's my latest oud:

And here's a couple of samples of how it sounds:

Another fine creation, Jo. Do you use violin pegs, or do you make your pegs individually by hand?

Thanks! I use oud pegs, which I then shave down to the correct diameter and taper using a peg shaver. The peg holes are then fitted to the same taper using a peg reamer. This ensures a good fit.

Do you build on a form or kind of "out in the air, using a guide for bending"? I have a book on historical lute construction, where the body is built on a form. I have a book on oud construction and repair, the in that book the ribs are bent on a shape about 3/4" wide and then just glued together off the form. I have some folks here that are encouraging me to build ouds and I'm stuck in the mud thinking about it.

Can I ask what scale length and suggested tunings are involved?

I appreciate your simple (in the best sense of instrument making), attractive and accurate style.

I build using a form. I have all different sizes of forms hanging on the wall of my workshop for the different instruments I build.

The scale length of this oud is 58.5cm, which is standard for Turkish (and some Arabic) ouds. This is otherwise built more like an Arabic oud than a Turkish one. I was mainly inspired by Iranian designs as I've been learning Persian music theory and playing a lot of that music.

Hi again. Further to my previous answer, I found a collage which I made whilst making an oud arbi a few months ago. Different instrument but same process:

Gorgeous instrument. It inspires me to get one day and play one again.

That instrument is beautiful, the construction video is great fun with enchanting music, and the sound is amazing.
The range of instruments shown on your web site is also rather stunning!
