Thread: Fiebing's red leather dye

    Default Fiebing's red leather dye

Do any of you have experience with their red leather dye? I bought some for an electric guitar and so far I'd describe the results as being more pink to purple rather than red. It's rather disconcerting - not to mention disappointing, but to be fair their on line colour chart does tend that way.

I used it for this project. This is before adding tru-oil, which did darken it.

Thanks, that's very much what I'm getting.

I’ve used their brown dye and it has a red tint.

Thanks people. So I haven't got a mislabelled bottle or anything. Is anyone familiar enough with their range to suggest whether there is a nice pure red in there? My enthusiasm for buying a few more bottles on spec is very limited! Fortunately the instrument in question is solid body so some extra sanding and scraping to remove the pink isn't a catastrophe, but I object to not getting things right the second time.

Mohawk sells a red dye that's pretty red. You'll probably have to buy a quart but if you're thinking of buying several more bottles of Fieblings, it might be cheaper. Either way, if you add a drop of black to the red, it will probably get you away from the pink. Just a drop or you could be headed for maroon.

Yes, Fiebings turns more pink over time. You might try the oxblood.

Red alcohol soluble aniline dye available from violin supply houses is a match for the red used on 'teens Gibson mandolins.
Use only pure grain alcohol to make your solution. Cut it with 25% acetone if you're going to mix it with lacquer.
