Default Leaving Stoer by Ivan Drever

    Hi,

Was wondering whether anyone plays this tune on mandolin? Does not appear to be much out there by any instrument.

Started learning it today after hearing a guitarist playing it on YouTube. Learning it based on the fiddle version by Duncan Chisholm ( Ivan Drever's old band mate from Wolfstone). That version seems more mando friendly than the few guitar versions I've heard.

Anyone else learned this? It's such a great tune, I'm surprised you don't hear it more often.

    Regards,

For sure. A lot of people I know play it.

    Hi,

Thanks Dagger. I was just surprised there were no mandolin versions on I Tunes or You Tube. Would welcome one of the experts like you posting a video if it’s a tune you play.

    Cheers,

    Yeah, why not?

Incidentally, I have been doing a mandolin online teaching course for Feis Rois called Mandolin For Fiddle Players - the idea being that people who might know the fiddle could pick up mandolin techniques. You don't have to play fiddle of course, especially if you know your way around the mandolin already.

I provide three 'Teaching Documents' which are three tunes with standard notation, tab and a ten minute film explaining how to play the tune, followed by three Zoom classes. We have been doing The Smith's A Gallant Fireman, Locheil's Welcome To Glasgow and Helen Scott Of Humbie. I think we are going to repeat the course, so perhaps it's something you might be interested in? Leaving Stoer might be a good one to do, actually.

Hi, Mandrian, I have just posted a version over on the Song-A-Week group and here it is for your amusement.

    That's nice, John.

Mandrian, I couldn't get that video of Ivan to play.

    Hi,

Sorry, I’m not the most technical. It comes up ok on my iPad?

If you search Ivan Drever Durham on YouTube it will be first up. Worth watching.

That is a really good video, Mandrian. Very informal and creates a great tmosphere. One of the more unusual venues, I would guess, and should certainly produce a very clean recording environment!
    Thanks too, Dagger.

Indeed, the venue does nothing to diminish the musical effect. This is truly indestructible.

I got up quite early today, and while waiting for daylight I decided to record Leaving Stoer on my octave mandolin. I find the bass strings tuned up to A to be really effective in playing this tune.

Great sustain in that octave, Dagger, and a good start to your day. Nicely played too!

    Dagger,

Thanks for posting the video. Much appreciate it. I presume the rest of the household were up too as that octave’s thunderous tone would wake up most folks.
