Default Odd Body Shape, ID Help Please

I was given this mandolin years ago. A woodworker (not a luthier) that I knew picked it up at a garage sale with a badly broken neck. He hand carved a new one, but I had doubts about its ability to handle the tension from eight steel strings. I kept it around as room decor, but recently put four nylon strings on to see what kind of ukulele it might make. I have a young niece who has started to play. Anyway, I have searched a lot of mando pics, and have seen none that looked like this. Anyone have any idea what it may be? Thanks.

There is a thread -or possibly more than one about this mandolin type, I am pretty sure. Somebody else, I am sure can remember what they are headlined and post them up.

Thanks. The big point on the bottom is actually quite functional. It keeps the instrument from sliding off your leg!

There are a few threads on the cafe in addition to the one Charley linked to. Take a look through these.
