Default The Wind That Shakes The Barley - Irish Reel

A very popular style of Irish song is the reel. It is pretty basic (4 beats per measure), just watch out for that Triplet!!!

Nice one pluckinstrings - just a wee heads up that in Irish music reels, jigs, hornpipes etc. are referred to as "tunes" with "songs" being reserved for music that is sung.

I think that is true for most types of music.

    Thanks.

I've seen versions without the triplet.
    Is that a written-in ornament?

If you mean is this generally considered a vital part of the tune, I'd say no. There are tunes where triplets are an integral part of the tune and can't be omitted without losing something, but for mandolin and tenor banjo players, triplets are often added as ornaments wherever the individual player wants to put them.

Yep, as Jill says, instrumental pieces played for dancing are usually called tunes as opposed to songs. And the Wind that Shakes the Barley is best-known as a tune. But it's one of the few reels I know that is also the melody for a song - The Little Pack of Tailors. You'll find it on YouTube sung by Elizabeth Cronin if you'd like to hear it.
