I bought one of those new about 2001 or 2002. Well made but I had to put a pickup in it to be heard. I was just looking at one this morning online and wishing I'd kept it

The Martin bass is tempting. I do have an acoustic amp (Trace Acoustic).

Well in frenzy of MAS I purchased the Epihphone De Lux classic acoustic bass, and ( as predicted by other reviewers) I turned the A tuning peg and the plastic handle immediately disintegrated, still waiting for a reply from Musician's Friend on how to rectify that, I was able to tune it with a vice grip, but I will say acoustically the "thump" is not really anything close to what an upright can do. So I don't think this is what Mrs Fatt-dad would want, I think the folks suggesting the 3/4 upright bass might be on the right track.

Most acoustic amps won’t do a bass properly, see Phil Jones Bass website. They’re not designed for the lower frequencies and fart out completely. Fact, it’s not difficult to blow your speakers. I was thinking that she could serve drinks while gigging and make some real cash! Lol’s

sorry Fatt-dad don't mean to take over this thread with whining about vendors but I called Musician Friend customer service, explained its just the plastic handle on the tuning peg, a $2.00 part they could ship and I could easily repair, -nope have to return the unit, they assure me they have residential pickup covered but no, I have to pay $11.00 or drive it to UPS store, Worst customer experience ever.

I have an old Alvarez acoustic electric bass guitar around, it was fun to play around with, played well and sounded good plugged in. It got closer to the sound of upright bass than most electric basses. Playing it acoustically though is an issue, it's just not loud enough to play with other instruments without an amp.

It is a pretty instrument, good construction and finish. I think it is laminate top and sides.

Looks like they go for about $300 used on reverb.
