Thread: Bowlback make/model?

  1. #1

    Default Bowlback make/model?

So, a friend of mine just discovered her mom had this mandolin in her closet for the last 30-40 years. The mom gave it to her to learn.
    The inlay is beautiful!
Do you recognize it, i.e., know the manufacturer and model? If so, any suggestions regarding its care? Do you know any reliable luthiers in the SLC, UT area.
Not sure how yo upload images?

I upload images using the the tree picture icon in the toolbar. If you click on it you can choose to upload images from your computer(IPhone) I’m not real tech savvy, but it works for me.

Might be made by Tonk/Chicago around the turn of the last century. Here's a page from my 1901 catalog. Catalogs are never completely accurate but this may be close enough. This is not particularly valuable. I don't know what work it needs but I would not invest lots of money into it.

also, restring it with ultra light strings. a lot of these weren't built for the tension modern medium (or heavier) weight strings bring.
