    Default F7 Chord

What do you suggest for the F7 chord, following a G9, then going to a G7? I'm lousy at expressing where I play chords, but can tell you the G9 uses 5th fret E string, 2nd fret A string, 3rd fret D string, open G; G7 uses 1st fret E string, 2nd fret A string, open D and G (although I might consider the 3 finger G7 starting with 1st finger on B, 2nd fret).

Song is Ode to Billy Joe in G major. (I don't believe it's e minor, but I may be wrong.)

Hah! I can't help you with the chords, but I love that song! Haven't thought about it in years. I have the soundtrack on vinyl.

I love it also. Playing the melody is quite challenging - for me, anyway.

I looked at a bunch of F7 chord variations, none of which seems obvious for my purpose.

Bobbie Gentry sings it in D, not sure why you're in G. There are versions on the internet that use D.
    D7 Am D7 D7
    D7 Am D7 D7
    G7 G7 D7 D7
    D7 C7 D7 D7

Try it in D, using some darker voicings. I like 5-0-0-x for the D7. It avoids the major third of the scale, and is more bluesy. Stay nearby and use 2-2-0-x for Am. For G7 chord I would use 4-3-0-x. It keeps the blues feel, a G9 without the root. Then for the hook, "Bille Joe McAllister..." I like 5-4-0-x followed by 3-2-0-x and back to 5-0-0-x.

Try these shapes along with Bobbie--- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CZt5Q-u4crc

    5-0-0-x 2-2-0-x 5-0-0-x 5-0-0-x
    5-0-0-x 2-2-0-x 5-0-0-x 5-0-0-x
    4-3-0-x 4-3-0-x 5-0-0-x 5-0-0-x
    5-4-0-x 3-2-0-x 5-0-0-x 5-0-0-x

To better accommodate my voice. I've subscribed to Musicnotes.com and have gone sort of crazy transposing to suitable keys for me and downloading songs I like. The downside is ending up with some weird chords that could be challenging in a jam setting.

Thanks, Mark. I've seen these notations, but my brain wants to name the notes, not the frets. Something else to learn.

In G I would use these chords:

    G7 -- (from low to high) G, F, D. (0-3-5-x)
    Dm -- A, F, D (2-3-5-x)
    C7 (I like C9 here) -- Bb, E, D (3-2-5-x)
    And the hook:
    G7 -- G, F, B (0-3-2-x)
    and F7 without the root -- C, Eb, A (5-1-0-x)
Or you could keep the G pedal for the F7 and substitute G, Eb, A (0-1-0-x)

Especially in this song I would avoid the E string, too tinkly and higher than the voce.

I need to study this more but wanted to mention the version I have uses Am7. With the sample I could only print the first page, but transposing from G, I presume G9 becomes D9 and F7 becomes B7.

I'm now confused. If you want to sing it in G I suggested some useful chords for that, just above. If you want to sing in D, the quoted material would apply.

If you are transposing your own chords from G to D, the F7 becomes C7. But I offered chords with a particular color, to emulate the tone of the song. Give either set a try.

I plan to try what you've suggested for both keys. Sorry for the confusion.

Dillon, this is a great resource. It is much like smartChord, which I have on my phone, but, unlike smartChord, the chords are all on one page and easy to see on my PC monitor.
