    Default NMD: Northfield Big Mon

I recently parted with my Gibson Doyle Lawson in favor of a 2019 Northfield Big Mon. It’s only been a few days, but it was a good move. I’m anxiously awaiting the report from the DL’s new owner, and hope he loves it.

This is my first instrument with an Engleman top, and first Northfield. I love how it looks, sounds, plays... I even love the Heirloom Recurve case. I put Nickel Bronze 11.5-40 strings on it, with pretty low action. At first, I thought the E and G were quiet, then realized what I’m hearing is perfect balance across all strings.

An extremely pleasant surprise is the varnish finish doesn’t seem to stick to my left hand like every other gloss finished neck I’ve played. The James tailpiece is pretty awesome, and I’ll be getting one for my other F-5 soon.

It’s always cool when something you’ve been eyeing for a few years lives up to and exceeds the expectations. When I decide to shop for another instrument, I’ll definitely be looking at the Artist models.

Awesome Chris, congrats!! I have been impressed with every Northfield I've played so far and I'm sure yours is just killer.
    Let's hear it sometime!

    Congratulations.
Glad that transaction turned out great for you.
Yes, the Northfield necks are so comfortable and easy to play.

I agree about the James tailpiece too.
I want one on any future mandolin I buy.
    Makes changing strings a breeze.

I hope to get a Big Mon at some point, for Bluegrass.
For the moment I am perfectly content with my 5Bar.

I can’t put it down! The only downside is I’m back on crazy pick and string rotation... currently EJ75s and a Wegen TF120.

It sounds a little warmer, right? Nothing wrong with Adirondack, but I really think this suits me a little more.
