Thanks for sharing your transcriptions - that was a nice thing to do. We are all all looking for constructive ways to redeem the time under social distancing restrictions, and learning new breaks can help. It takes focus and commitment to learn a performer's technique and transcribe - how long did these take you?

I haven't played my violin or mandolin seriously in 35+ years. Listening to Sierra play inspires me to work on my playing.

    Thanks for the transcription.

Thanks John! It didn't take too long...maybe an hour for each of the Sierra Hull demos. I found them to be instructional jewels for my mandolin student. The Aaron Weinstein solos took longer.

I really like her version from 3:00-3:30, particularly 3:10-3:18, but I can't figure it out. Is transcribing it a matter of slowing it down to 0.25 speed and unpause-pause, back up, over and and over. Are you looking at fingers or sound or both?

The sound gets really distorted at 1/4 speed on YouTube.

I always transcribe by ear first and then look at the video to check specific fingerings
esp. if it is important...and only if the passage is really fast will i slow it down but a lot of work can be saved by just listening to the performance until I'm familiar with it.
Are you referring to the video where she's playing to the dogs mandokismet?

Hi Mandokismet. This solo seems pretty straight other than some syncopation.
If you're having difficulties following the line while listening, use a free tool
you can download from the internet 'Audacity' to extract the sound file only.
Then edit the solo or part you want to figure out and 'change speed' to 0.5
Here's an example using the tool - slowed down to 0.68

If you're still having problems, let me know and I'll transcribe it for you.

Roland - Thanks! That was too kind! I was out of cell and internet for the long weekend. I'll definitely try using Audacity in the future. I'm sure the transcribing will help with training my ear...

I finally got me a mandolin and I will be redoing all my mandolin transcriptions
on a mandolin rather than a guitar. Sierra Hull's Old Dangerfield (Carter Vintage Demo)

Hi Roland, I don't know if you still have access to your transcriptions but the link posted no longer works. If you still have it handy I would be super grateful if you could repost it with a working link.

I also would really like to access the files but only get the message “file not found” which ever link I try.
