Default Yet Another What Strings Do Yiu Use? Thread !!!

I’ve been using 13/24/34/52 on my GBOM for some years (scale length 20 1/2 inches). My stock is getting depleted and I’m just about to get the nice people at Newtone to make me a few more sets.

I feel that I could do with them being a little heavier. What do you use/think/recommend?

Check out Austin Clark’s strings. He has them custom made for his GBOMs.

I have them custom made in the UK - Newtone are less than 20 miles down the road from me - and importing from the US to the UK is prohibitively expensive. What I don’t want to do is to order say ten sets and then decide they’re too heavy; I’m just looking to see what others are using.

I don’t know where Austin gets his custom sets from (I didn’t know he did them) but, as it happens, it was Austin who originally suggested the gauges I’ve been using, I just feel that I could do with something a tad heavier. ....... and, yes, it’ Clark GBOM No.84.

Who made your GBOM? Is it an archtop or flattop?

Your current gauges are running these approximate tensions:

    E4 329.63 Hz 20.5" 0.0130" PL 0.00003744 lb/in 17.70 lb
    E4 329.63 Hz 20.5" 0.0130" PL 0.00003744 lb/in 17.70 lb
    A3 220.00 Hz 20.5" 0.0240" PB 0.00011682 lb/in 24.60 lb
    A3 220.00 Hz 20.5" 0.0240" PB 0.00011682 lb/in 24.60 lb
    D3 146.83 Hz 20.5" 0.0340" PB 0.00023887 lb/in 22.40 lb
    D3 146.83 Hz 20.5" 0.0340" PB 0.00023887 lb/in 22.40 lb
    G2 98.00 Hz 20.5" 0.0520" PB 0.00055223 lb/in 23.07 lb
    G2 98.00 Hz 20.5" 0.0520" PB 0.00055223 lb/in 23.07 lb
    175.54 lb

If it were me I would increase the gauge for the E string to a .014:

    E4 329.63 Hz 20.5" 0.0140" PL 0.00004342 lb/in 20.52 lb
    E4 329.63 Hz 20.5" 0.0140" PL 0.00004342 lb/in 20.52 lb
    181.20 lb

FWIW I am running .016, .024, .032, .052 on my 20" Buchanan, which it seems happy with, although the recommended gauges are .016, .024, .036, .054.
