Default New Northfield Big Mon on it's way.

Just pulled the trigger on a new Northfield Big Mon. Got a really good price on it. I bought it on line from a reputable dealer. I have not heard or seen it yet. Wish me luck!

While I haven't played a Northfield myself yet, I don't think you need worry about loving it...more about not being able to put it down!

Those look like great mandolins. I bought a Northfield NF5SA a few months ago and love it. I'm sure you're going to love it once you get it. Congratulations!

I have played a few new Northfield Big Mons at Gryphons over the years and I liked them a lot for the money.
Like all new mandolins it will benefit from lots of vigorous play-time.
I think you will be very pleased.

What's the difference? Is it just in appearance, or is there any sound aspect and if so, what? Do all the NF5Ss, for example, use the same wood for the top?

I don't think you can go wrong with any Northfield. They're pretty dialed in right now. There are variations of good, and how well it fits your style, but I think your guaranteed an instrument that will fall somewhere on the good to great spectrum.

To my ears, Engelmann is darker sounding with a less pronounced note pop. They certainly sound different regardless of how they are described. It’s a personal preference - I was just curious

The grain probably looks different and I’m not sure about the NF5S specs (although it’s another nice mandolin).

I’ve played a number of Northfields, and have owned my F5S for 5 years. They’re great mandolins.

Congratulations on your new baby! I'm sure you'll love it every minute of every day. The thing about Northfield is they are extremely consistent in quality. I've played on many and all were just wonderful mandolins. I finally got a Big Mon and couldn't be happier. Cheers!

I've had mandolins of every type for 50 years or more. Literally hundreds and none better than my 2016 Big Mon. I've always said I reckon I got the best one ever to come out of their factory. I'm not normally biased but just can't imagine a better F5. Good luck. Set up is everything.

Nice congrats! My F5M is almost 6 years old now and I love it! It has an Engelmann top and everyone always thinks it sounds great...even when I’m playing...ha! Enjoy and post some pics when you can.
