I've been wanting to put out some ideas in tutorials for Willie Nelson numbers, but there never seems the time, or I lack the patience, to do it the way I want. This morning, I decided to go ahead and just throw together one of them without going to all the trouble of "doing it right."
My original plan was to take each tune and play it slowly showing the chord names, followed by up to speed solo performance. After that, to discuss different chord choices and voicings, and show the melody playing and solo ideas.
Scrap all that for now. This is a quick video of Crazy comping slowly and showing chord names, and nothing else. It is the arrangement I use for solo mandolin with vocals, but slowed down. I hacked it out this morning with no warm up, so some of my demonstration is not very clean (an ugly and imprecise C chord at the end, for instance). But the point is to show a slow tutorial, not to dazzle with musicianship. So here it is.
Chords used:
C: 5-2-3-x (most of my comping omits the E string except for adding color)
C: 5-5-x-x (this C5 is used over the word “blue” in the second line)
C: 5-2-3-0 (for color in the middle eight section)
Cdim: 5-4-6-x (partial chord, same shape as used for A7, G7)
A: 2-2-4-x
A7: 6-5-7-x
Dm: 7-7-8-x
Dm: 7-7-8-10 (for color)
Dm7: 7-7-8-8
G7: 4-3-5-x
G: 0-0-2-3 (I would use this G where I put the runs, if not playing runs)
G: 4-5-x-x (this partial G is used over the word “do?” in line 6)
F: 2-3-3-x
F: 2-3-3-5 (for color)
C#: 6-3-4-x (used as a quick passing chord in middle eight section)
Em: 4-2-2-x
NOTE: I like the Cdmin as a passing chord where indicated, but C#dim is usually called out in charts for this song, so if you prefer that sound in passing, just move the fingering up to C#dim: 6-5-7-x where Cdim is called out above.
