Thread: Trillium Mandola (new to me)

Default Trillium Mandola (new to me)

Complete impulse buy. I saw it, I bought it, and hoped my tax return would come. It did and she's paid off. I can check mandola off the list. This one is a lifer.

I don't know that much about Trillium instruments. This one was set up for CDEG. I usually play long scale mandolas CGDG. Not really sure what gauge strings are recommended. It has a visibly arched top and back but it sort of looks like a cylinder top rather than carved?

I'm horribly disloyal to good instruments but this one is staying with me until I'm gone.

Sweet 'dola! I use EJ-72s on mine but haven't really tried any others thus far.

Trilliums have a great reputation, I have played a few of Bob's octaves, I'm sure that's a gem of a dola! Congrats!

So it was you!! Glad you're enjoying it. That scale length should give you some options.

    Hi Chuck,

The original owner requested CGEG tuning and it was delivered strung .044"w/.030"w/.017"/.014". For more typical mandola CGDA tuning, I might suggest .044"w/.030"w/.020"w/.012".

The top and back have "induced" arches. A uniformly thick piece of wood was bent over curved braces to form a spherical section.

I hope you enjoy the instrument for many years to come....

    Kindest regards,
    Bob

Thanks for the info Bob. I'm really enjoying it. I'll be happy to get a wound second course on. The .017 was plain steel and I think you get a richer sound out of a wound string.

My wife just got a nyckleharpa that like to play in C and a low G MK whistle. The mandola seems to be a great partner for both of em. Gives us something to work on while we all stay home.

I'll try to do a video soon. (kids willing)
