I'm wondering if anyone makes a pick that mimics the sound of fingers on strings? Not fingernails but the 'fleshy part' of finger tips.
Just tried finger picking an octave mandolin and I love the sound. Not so brassy and jangling.

Dava makes some soft tipped picks, although I doubt they were designed to mimic fingers on strings.

It's possible that the "rubbery" nature of Wolle picks might create the effect you are looking for. If you want to experiment with one and not have to order from Germany, send me your address in a pm and I will give you one. Note that you must sand/shape these picks yourself.

The Wedgie elastomer pick us comically quiet when used on a mandolin. But for an octave or 'cello... who knows?
