sound post experiment

I'm not a builder, more of a repair person and technician, also an experimenter. Since a friend gave me a fiddle I've been wondering if a mandolin with a sound post under the treble side of the bridge has been tried. I have several inexpensive mandolins I have tried design modifications on and I'm not afraid to fail. Thinking about removing the treble side tone bar and installing a post on a Rover A model. Any thoughts or advice. Thanks

Over the years it has been discussed many times. The mandolin and the violin top and back operated differently. While you're waiting for some answers take a look though these threads.

One thing that I can say after watching this conversation over the last several years is that generally the sound post on a mandolin seems to work best when the top has collapsed and there is no other way to keep the instrument playable without actually repairing the problem. In that situation people become adamant that they work.

Thank you all for your replies. I will read all the reference posts you've linked to and if I'm discouraged I'll change the oil in my car instead. If I proceed with the project I'll keep you posted.
