How do the tonal qualities compare with the solid body 5 string, and how much lighter is it?

I can't say. This one is unique. It has a block glued in right under the bridge and tailpiece. Normally, I would have a strip that connects to the the aft end of the body as pictured. I am probably going to go with the block on mandolins as I have been experimenting with buffers and that buffer and battery would go under ebony plate on the top. Plus, I'll need more room for knobs and switches. I don't know what the weight is and couldn't speculate with all the different laminates in it. My best guess would be that more weight, especially along the length of the neck plane, would give it a bit more sustain. My larger scale instruments, OM, tenors and standard guitars will have a center section the whole length to mimic a neck through design.
