    Default Pomerory - Don Paine

I just bought my 2nd Pomeroy from Don.

This is a (in his words) "bare bones" oval hole A, to join my 2 point violin style built in 2018.

His fit and finish and choice of woods is wonderful. I've had too many oval holes where the lower strings just boom...the sound hole adds a bassy shape filling in the lower octaves creating a solid core, with nice ringing higher octave overtones.

Don calls this "bare bones"..I call it simple, but full of expression: tortoise around the sound hole and top binding. A pretty yellow-orange color to the wood with lots of vibrations and overtones.

His hand made mandolins have got to be the steal of all time as you get so much for what you pay for.

If it's this one, you did well judging by the soundclips on the page. http://pomeroyinstruments.com/pomero...n-oil-varnish/

I love Don's work... his love of wood is apparent, his ear for tone impeccable. I love the "V style" vibe in particular, and at present I am the grateful custodian of this one, #245 http://pomeroyinstruments.com/245-2-...n-oil-varnish/. It brings a smile every time I open the case.

    Enjoy!

Some of the early Pomeroy F5 models by Don Paine featured beautiful, elaborate inlays on the headstock. Also, he had special tailpieces made up by a jeweler, made from solid sterling silver, with the Pomeroy logo affixed. Shown below are Pomeroy #8 (hummingbird howering over flowers) and #5 (a bird of paradise under the crescent moon and stars). The tailpiece cover from #8 is also shown, with a woman swinging on a lyre. Alas, his latest models are no longer as fancy, but they still sound terrific! I still own #8, which I love. Click on the photos below to expand them, and see the intricate work.
