Thread: Irish Mandolin lessons?

    Default Irish Mandolin lessons?

Greetings all, could anyone recommend possible tutors for one-on-one lessons in Irish mandolin? I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate and I think some personal instruction via Skype etc. would be the best way to get me to the next level (if that's even possible for someone starting out at an advanced age!).
    thanks

I feel ya on the advanced age issue. There are some great tools on YouTube that actually do slow tabs and even slower tabs (too slow for me, something is really lost). But it is a great tool.

Right now I am in a funk and haven't played for a couple of weeks. Hoping this ends soon , but I have just lost any desire for a monment.

Marla Fibish is a gifted teacher. She's also a great player and has a deep understanding of Irish music.

You won't just learn tunes, you'll learn the rhythm, approach and picking techniques for each tune type – reel, jig, hornpipe, polka, slide, slip jig, hop jig, fling, barndance, etc. And ornamentation appropriate for the different tune types.

It's really important to get the fundamentals down – posture, good sound production, picking direction – whether you're new to the mandolin or Irish music or you're more advanced and may have acquired some bad habits. I recommend her for students of all levels.

Have to follow the rest and recommend Marla on Peghead Nation. I come from rural Ireland and grew up playing at ceilis but gave Marla a go on Peghead on the recommendation of a friend. She gave me new perspective on my picking, my rhythm emphasis on different types of tunes and general phrasing for tunes. I've been telling life long Irish trad musicians to give her course a go ever since.
