ngladd, have you seen the version by T Pender in the Italian Mandolin book he had through PS. I like it the best in the book currently but am curious of other versions and how they compare. Any insight is appreciated. What would the names be of some versions I should hunt for? I encourage everyone to give there thoughts. I started this thread because I didn't want to creat to much side discussion in the composition thread. Thanks John

I'm not certainly not Neil Gladd BUT I thought I'd respond anyway:
There are some virtuosic arrangements of "Carnival of Venice" out there, in fact one that the Troesters' recorded is on EBay.

It could be fun for you to make up your own variations.
Learn the Pender version and then sing your own variations (what you hear in your head) into a cassette player. Then figure out what you sang and learn it on your mandolin.
That way, you are playing YOUR music, what's in your mind's (and heart's) musical vocabulary at this point in your musical development.

    Cheers,
    Mark

Thanks Mark. It wasn't my intention to here from ngladd only. I was just thinking that he may know some variations off the top of his head since it is a current project of his. I like the sing it idea but didn't know there were words to it. Where would one find them at. Thanks John

I didn't mean singing words, I meant humming a melody while you play the chords and coming up with your own (improvised) variation.

Also, I think most major libraries have a sheet music section and you could probably find other versions of "Carnival of Venice" in the piano/violin sheet music.

    good luck!

I never thought of the library. Excellent idea thanks so much. I think I'll head over there as soon as I shovel the snow, again!, for the third time in five hours. John

I have that book somewhere amid the rubble, but have to confess that I haven't looked at it much. I started off as a cornet player, so I know the Arban variations that were mentioned very well. Several mandolinists have done variations on Carnival of Venice, so it seemed like something I ought to do, myself. I like to write in traditional forms (Sonatas, Concertos, etc.) and have not written any variations yet.

Has anyone every seen/played Bellenghi's set of variations on the "Carnival of Venice"? Anybody have a copy? If so, could someone tell me if he used his nom de plume "G.B. Pirani"? Thank you for your help.

Wow, twenty-two variations, and by a composer I've never heard of! Must give this a try in the morning.

    Thanks, Jairo (and Sheri)!

Here is another unreasonable set of Variations on Carnival of Venice by Valentine Abt. The unreasonable part is going back and forth between harmonics and arpeggios!

This is great! Carlo Colombo played this as a flashy encore so I'm pretty sure he would have used Bellenghi, the earliest arrangement. I enjoy seeing the other arrangements., too. Thanks everyone!
