I stopped playing all instruments for several decades to solidify my sobriety as I feared my playing out was tied to my drinking. After returning to guitar I picked up the mandolin as well and am again enjoying both. I recall some years ago saying to my duo partner as we walked up to perform at my first open mic in many years "I remember now why I used to drink before I played!" As others have noted, part of the idea of 'paying your dues' is more time playing before others. You're in a new context and it will come with time-and the audience hasn't a clue that you played a 'wrong' note.
