Thread: Where to find a Roman/Ranieri Plectrum?

It took some hoop jumping, but not substantial difficulty for me to register and order from Galli. Of course, product is not yet in hand, but I seem to have order confirmation by e-mail.

I used to make routine use of Dogal's gauge-3 plectra, but find them to small and light for my recent play. In the US, Dogal plectra can also be ordered from Strings By Mail.

Pickboy also imports a Japanese celluloid pick with a generally Neapolitan-like profile but with a heart-shaped trailing edge for better grip. They're very similar in size and thickness to the Dogal 3s.

I was wondering if anyone is aware of how "pointy" Sebastiaan De Grebber's pick is. I use a BC Jazz pick as my definition of pointy. Thank you.

As far as I know, Sebastiaan De Grebber uses a traditional Roman/Ranieri-style plectrum. Red Bear's were developed with his consultation: https://www.redbeartrading.com/ccp8/...show&ref=RMNTS.

I'm impressed with Galli. I placed an order Monday morning. They shipped from Italy that afternoon and arrived at my front door early Wednesday afternoon! The profile and thickness on their heavy gauge is about perfect for me. (Their medium gauge too floppy.) And I love the tone and feel of celluloid on steel strings. However, celluloid is more slippery on the flesh than tortis or tortoise and certainly wears more quickly. Still, I'm very pleased with my introduction to Galli's Neapolitan-style plectra.

As Ralf Leenen was quite happy with some modern celluloid picks, which I have lying around, I just tried to glue two together, to get more of a roman shape and that was a success. Just clamping them and let the superglue wick in between the two.

I'm still shaping it, which will take some weeks but the method works, and the picks are readily available in many shops or Aliexpress.

I suppose that will work but it looks a bit unwieldy to me. To give you an idea of the official shape and size of a Ranieri plectrum. Here are a couple of examples:

I have the Carlo Aonzo Galli pick and tried to order from the Galli website. Captcha never worked so I wasn't successful. Any tips for that?

Well it was an idea how to make them DYI. Whatever shape is up to the maker.

For me, an easy way to try that type of pick

I was able to find a decent thickness of ultem plastic in sheet size years ago. I cut them out to size and worked them with a Dremel (rotary) tool and fine sanded with fingernail files. Here's one I made (see below). I guess it was sort of a fad around here at MC back then to try out that oddball pick. The longer length of the pick requires a very different picking technique. I never did get the tremolo worked proper but I was able to play some pieces with it back then. I haven't played them recently. I also included Ralf Leenen's drawing that I worked from for the proper shape. I blew it up to match the measurements he provided and then cut out the basic shape from that template.

I wanted to try the shape AND the celluloid because of the video by Ralf Leenen.

I have made normal picks from Teflon which I like very much. Maybe I'll try a roman pick of teflon, which I have in a sheet. I have cut with scissors and also with a pick punch.

    I did find a place in the US that will supply a relatively thin 1/16" or 1/8" (1.58mm or 3.175mm) small quantity 12" X 12" (30.48mm X 30.48mm) sheet of ultem plastic: https://www.mcmaster.com/ultem-sheet-stock/

I think I used the 1/16" thickness for my preferred pick though the actual Ranieri picks were really much thicker in the center and tapered at the edges.

Not sure if you can find suppliers in Europe. It seems like many plastic manufacturers in the US have thicker sheets but few have very thin thicknesses.

    12"× 12"
    12"× 24"
    Thick. Each Each
    0.04" 8685K41 $25.38 8685K42 $44.69
    1/16" 8685K43 36.27 8685K44 66.23
    3/32" 8685K45 57.97 8685K46 101.45
    1/8" 8685K47 76.99 8685K48 134.73
