Thread: Planetary tuners or guitar style on tenor banjo?

Default Planetary tuners or guitar style on tenor banjo?

I just picked up a Gold Tone Cripple Creek Tenor Banjo, used for a good price.

Previous owner changed it to GDAE (without cutting new slots in the bridge) and installed planetary tuning machines.
I'm going to restring it CGDA and I'm considering going back to sealed guitar style running machines. I know that planetary is traditional for banjo and tenor, but they are super hard to get small adjustments from.
I'm not going to be retuning to anything other than CGDA and would like to be able to make smaller adjustments more easily.
I have a set of guitar style machines I could use.
    Suggestions or remarks?
    Thanks!

Go with guitar style tuners, 16:1 ratio beats 4;1 ratio any day. I used to own a Gibson trapdoor tenor banjo from the 20's and was glad to have the guitar style tuners.

I must admit i hate planetary tuners aesthetically speaking. i'd love a TG50 or ETG150 (both Gibson tenors) but only if they are somewhere around the 50s or 60s so i can avoid the planetary thingies...

This is obviously a personal thing, I love the look and feel of banjo pegs?
You can get mini geared pegs too, I fit them to most new builds I make and I have been asked to fit them on the few commissions I have made!
I think they look especially good on arch tops.
