I recently purchased a used Mandocaster. The action is set higher than on my Bovier (about 1.75mm at 12th fret G string). Is there any reason to have a higher action on an electric or should I drop it down a bit?

Absent string buzz or masochism I'd say drop it down

The previous owner may have had it setup for some slide playing ala' Sammy Bush It should be easy enough to get setup to your liking.....

If you can remove the neck (assuming a bolt on neck) you can also shim the neck pocket to bring the action down lower for regular fingering. I like to use business cards as shims. Good luck!!
