    Default Classical Mando Video Sessions

    Hey All,

My name is Jordan and I have been a frequent visitor to the cafe for about as long as I can remember. I run the Mandolin department at a shop in Lexington Massachusetts called The Music Emporium and am by all counts a super nerd. I have never been very good with technology but with this whole stay at home thing happening I thought I would buy a video camera and start working up some of the classical stuff I am into. This seemed like the best place to share it. This first piece I am stumbling through is the first movement of a solo violin sonata titled "Obsession" written by Eugene Ysaye. The story I heard is that after seeing a performance of Bach's Violin Sonatas and Partitas, Eugene was inspired to write his own Sonata about playing Bach's Sonatas. Meta, I know. The piece references the Bach E major prelude note for note all over the place, and the second re occurring theme is the almost comically placed "Dies Irae" (the Gregorian chant for The Day of Judgement). I will post more videos as I finish the pieces, I hope you enjoy this one!

P.S. if there are any other classical Mando nerds out there feel free to post a video!

Jordan, your playing in the video was fantastic – and what an interesting piece! Please post more when you get the chance.

Thanks so much! I'm thinking maybe I'll at the second movement next because it's a lovely contrast

I'm so glad I can't play nearly well enough to approach Ysaye! It makes hearing a performance like this so very, very wonderful! Thanks.

Oh wow I didn't even realize there was a classical sub forum! Looks like there's a ton of cool stuff there, maybe this thread would be better suited on that platform?

    Great piece, beautifully played.

I find it somehow reassuring that people were as judgmental about Bach in Ysa˙e's day as they are now. Some things don't change.
