This prelude is from the suite with the popular Boureé.

Very nice! I just recorded a video of this a couple weeks ago as part of my Bach project this year, so I appreciate all the difficult parts you played much better than I did. Are you playing a mandola, or a five-course instrument?

The picture shows it. Buchanan 10-string, 14.25" scale, CGDAE. Scale is shorter than mandola, approximately viola scale, making chords easier. I use a Shure KSM 32 condenser mic and Headway undersaddle pickup, through ProTools.

You bring out the voicings nicely--the baroque thing of an instrument accompanying itself with repeated drones, patterns in different octaves, and such. Smooth articulation too--I can never get that with a pick! Beautiful.

Very nicely played. Thanks for posting this recording. Do you find the five course range necessary to play this piece or are you going for the deeper tone of the larger mando body?
I live about 5 miles from the former Buchanan workshop in Yorkshire. I wish I had ordered one of those when I visited!

    Thanks for listening.

The C course lets me play alto/cello stuff, and the E string is always handy. Buchanan makes the body about 50% more internal volume than his mandolins, so it has the deeper tone, but the shorter (not-mandola) scales keeps the reaches comfortable.

The only mandolins I own are 10-strings, two acoustic and two electric.

That was lovely Tom..the way you maintain the sustain and respond to it is wonderful to listen to and experience.
Great with headphones by the way!
    Thanks for posting!
