Thread: Lester 'Road Hog' Moran

    Default Lester 'Road Hog' Moran

Harold Reid, or Lester 'Road Hog' Moran, died on Friday April 24 at the age of 80. His was the deep bass voice of the Statler Brothers on many albums, and, memorably, the leader of the Cadillac Cowboys, a hilarious spoof of country music which has become a cult favorite since the Statlers introduced that part of their act in 1972. I can not honestly link any mandolin connections with the Old Road Hog, or his group, but I am confident that many of us on this board laughed out loud when the music from radio station WEAK came roaring out of the Johnny Mack Brown Auditorium.
One of the guys that I play OTM with is, like me, a connoisseur of the CC (Cadillac Cowboys). All it takes is a look, and 'Kick it off, Wichita', and we are both in stitches.
    You were a 'goodern', Harold.

Sad news, he was such a wonderful entertainer and singer. His bass voice could rattle your fillings in the best way, always brought a smile to me.

I've been thinking about little else since I noticed this thread earlier today. Hard to believe I didn't hear or read of Harold Reid's passing anywhere on the news.
Nothing wrong with the 'Lester 'Road Hog' Moran' thread title, but I'd imagine it's somewhat of an obscure reference for the average reader here.

I really loved the Statler Brothers (pre and post Jimmy Fortune's arrival) and Harold's bass voice and great stage presence really glued them all together in my opinion.

Here's two of my favorites. Somewhat obscure but well written and sung. RIP Harold Reid.

But, we are a rather “obscure bunch” aren’t we? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Mike I’m going out to work on dinner and will rack up some of the you tube offerings. I was actually introduced to Lester through Bill Halsey! Those were the days!

I don't know how many times I have seen that clip with Ralph Emery. Always makes me laugh. But my absolute favorite skit concerned Buford, the barber, who could not be there that night because he had just gotten out of the hospital, after recovering from an autopsy.

I listened to that album many times back in the day. Shear brilliance. Lester used to say, “Now its that time when me and the boys take our hats off, and gather round the mike and sing one for the Lord.” Ive used that line a few times myself. I suppose in some way the Cadillac Cowboys are the inspiration for Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers.
