Default Appendectomy: Trust Your Gut (some mandolin content)

Title says it. Went to the ER yesterday and had my appendix swiftly removed. Symptoms started Tuesday and never got that bad, to be honest. I’m glad I trusted my gut, despite my hesitation to visit a hospital during the coronavirus pandemic.

I read a forum post about fitting dovetail neck joints while I was waiting for surgery, and I can still play mandolin while I recover. I can’t pick up my 14-month old though, which is a bummer.

If something’s bothering you, go get checked!

Here’s a tune to bring it back to mandolin:

I'm glad you are on the mend, Drew. It's lucky you trusted your instinct and overcame your justified concern of going to the hospital at this time. Rest up and be well.

    Best wishes,

Hoping for a speedy recovery. That's one nightmare I don't want to have to go through right now.

Hopefully you were able to have yours removed before it ruptured. I was out on a Saturday bike ride with a group and started feeling bad. We usually went to a bakery or deli after the ride. I got off my bike and trough it in the back of my truck and headed home. I kept getting worse Saturday and into Sunday morning. About noon I started to feel better and it was Super Bowl Sunday so decided to watch. I suspected what was wrong but kind of hard headed like a lot of us. My wife was gone that weekend and came home just about half time and took one look and said what is wrong? Then insisted we go the emergency room, I had waited that long and it was a good game so did not really want to go. Mine had ruptured and I had them out. I was fine the first night but the second night the nurse was filling rubber gloves with ice and putting them in my arm pits and down the length of my body because of a bad fever due to the infection. It was a really quite a while before I was fully recovered and full strength. That was when I had to re-evaluate and figure out I was not invincible, so am more proactive now.
So wishing you a speedy recovery, take it easy.

Yikes! Somehow mine hadn’t ruptured, despite waiting almost four days. Like I said, the pain never was really horrible... but I didn’t accept my first telemedicine diagnosis of a kidney stone. My sis-in-law, who’s an ER nurse, got me to talk to another NP, and it was his recommendation that convinced me to go.

Glad you made it through that ordeal!

Difficult remmebering exactly what it was like, I had mine removed 59 years ago and I don’t think I’d even heard of mandolins back in those days!

Had mine out at age 12, after the nurse sent me home from school. I was miserable, got taken to the doctor -- do you remember when "general practitioners" used to do all kinds of tests and minor surgeries right in their offices? Dr. Yanowitch looked at some of my blood, saw an abnormally high "white count," suggested my mom drive me to a local hospital. I had the operation that very evening, and was told later I was a couple hours away from rupture and peritonitis. This was mid-1950's, and while antibiotics were in general use, a ruptured appendix was still considered pretty major.

I missed a bunch of middle school, or "junior high" as we called it, but apparently dodged a bullet. Agree: if you get significant symptoms, "toughing it out" can be a bad mistake. On the other hand, I just had a friend die from COVID-19 he contracted after being hospitalized for an injury, so two sides to that coin...

I know from experience that toughing it out can be a bad mistake, and STILL my boneheaded will triumphs (at least temporarily) over common sense when it comes to a trip to the ER . . .

Thanks for your rendition of Paradise. One of my favorites to play on mando and guitar (in D as well).

    You gave me some ideas

    Get well soon.

Drew, I'm glad you are doing okay. Things can turn bad quick with your appendix.

Glad you are on the mend. I had my appendix out at age 6 (spent my 7th birthday in the hospital,) 59 years later I have never missed it. One less thing to go wrong now. Enjoy your practice time, since mandolins weigh less than small children.

Great job Drew!... love that song and your rendition was great! Glad you're all good health-wise. It's a good thing you got more than one opinion and were able to get it taken care of without major issues!... soon this will all be just be a short note in appendices of Your life... sorry bad pun.

I broke my pinky toe on my right foot today... I think I'll be ok though.
