I talked with the owner today at the mandolin store. He is actually in the process of having dual medical procedures, transplants... and obviously is going to have to be very cautious with the covid-19 situation but they're still allowing people to make an appointment to come in and see something but it sounded like he wanted to know specifically what you wanted to see and he would have that mandolin ready for you to see when you arrived which is kind of not really what I think of when going into a store but I may have misunderstood him. I think of sitting down and taking my time and comparing different instruments against each other as well as picking the particular grain pattern, feel, etc when more than one unit is available. So it was a little odd and little sad to hear his situation. I hope and pray the best for him but I'm not certain what I'm going to do yet. Still heavily leaning toward getting a Kentucky 272 from him. I need to keep the cost down so a Big Muddy or Red Valley may be ruled out but I'll see what's what in a week or two. He did mention that there are quality control issues with the Kentucky mandolins which were mainly issues with the nuts, truss rods and bridges... which are things that would be sorted out at the mandolin store during setup but he was telling me that they had gotten pretty bad with those areas when they were being sent to him. I'm sure it would be fine after it was set up but anyway just throwing that information out there.

I wouldn't worry about the setup. The Mandolin Store is known for those. As far as wandering around a store and pulling instruments off the wall, those days may not return anytime soon, and not just at TMS.

Yeah, I'm probably just going to order one through their online store.

I've played both. The Red Valley is much louder and projects better. Workmanship is also better on the Red Valley; IMO...
    Thanks for your support?

If you can scrounge up a bit of extra scratch, or talk down the seller, this one might be worthy of consideration:

Pheffernan beat me to it - the Morris could be a really good mandolin and keep you happy for quite a while

I hope you got this one, which I nearly recommended a number of times but couldn’t decide if I was actually going to move on myself:

Does anyone know the nut width of the Morris? I can't find a website.

Hey, Iíve been following this thread and Iím in a similar situation. Honestly, I donít think you should get so hung up on the nut width.Thereís other factors involved. Check out the sellerís return policy and give something a try. Eastman. Morris. Red Valley. Big Muddy. Anything! Try something out!

Gee, I hadn't thought of that.

    It's... a... question...

    I'm familiar with purchasing instruments.

I would guess 1 1/8" and a flat fretboard. You could msg the seller and find out for sure.

In that price range, I'd seriously consider the Morris listed in the classifieds.

Edit: D'oh, already mentioned in earlier posts!

MYSELF BEING A VINTAGE GIBSON MANDOLIN NUT-NOT SURE OF THE PRICE BUT BERNUNZIO'S HAS AN EARLY 30'S MAYBE A 34 GIBSON A-50-OVAL HOLE BUT HAS THE RARE ELEVATED FRET BOARD RATHER THAN GLUED FLUSH TO THE TOP-THESE ARE GREAT MANDOLINS-I'M MORE INTO F-HOLE MANDOLINS BUT THE ONE JOHN HAS IS VERY NICE AND ON THE RARE SIDE! NFInterst on my part! BUT THESE ELEVATED BOARD A MODELS SURE ARE FAR SUPERIOR IN TONE/VOLUME AND OVERALL VOICE, JUST MY OPINION ON THESE OLDER GIBSON'S, AND JOHNS A REALLY GOOD GUY THAT TAKES TRADES AND WILL WORK WITH YOU ON HIS PRICES.
