Ok Liam I just listened to this again. It sounds like he is playing arpeggios inside of the three finger chop chord. Are you familiar with that? It's in 3/4 time in the key of G. Start with the G chop chord and play the three chord tones adding scale tones in between to fit the timing. Let me know if you need more detail.

Yes to my ear I could hear the GBD and a C thrown in...maybe it si the timing that gives it that distinct sound.

Right, and if you slide from Bb to B you add that bluesy sound that Bill played a lot. Bill liked to play inside chord shapes like that.
