Which GDAE are you thinking? It's scale length is only 13.5" Higher Mandolin tuning probably might be to go

13 7/8" is fine for Mandolin tuning I go as long as 17" with the right strings. I don't think you'll be satisfied down the Octave with Tenor tuning at 13 7/8.

    Question Re: Seagull steel ukulele

Long running topic of Nylon strings in 5th tuning so either can be used ..
    I have a steel .050 for C on my Gibson Em150 4 string conversion,

Aquilla does a 5ths tuning nylon string set too ... Ive faked one with Martin Baritone set, 3 . with 1 soprano string on the 1st.

FCGD is still 5ths without cranking all 4 tighter.. just the chords have different names..

I've seen this said a lot of times, but I don't understand why. Is it because the bass G that makes it too floppy in that lower register?

Re-entrant tuning is a Soprano Uke Standard, so maybe gDAe the g an octave higher, thinner string to still use your familiar chord fingerings..

Question Re: you found there is a Seagull steel string ukulele.

'You guys go first and tell me how it is' ?(A common theme) indicates a lack of adventurousness..

so.. You Do and Revue for others, will be a path forward ..

typical , light mandolin string set 10~36 shouldn't be too much tension

send me one and I can give a revue.. in exchange for the gift..

Have 2 CGDA 4 string electrics on mandolin scale instruments .

and a rebuilt spruce head on an old banjo Uke, with 4 Aquila nylon mandolin strings ..
5th tuning could be FCGD ..

Sorry I've never owned one of these or tried it. But I think you could look at it as an electric domra if tuned GDAE. Or a 4 string mandolin.

Gold Tone's 4-string electric mandolin's scale length is 13 and 3/4 inches. So 4-string electric mandolins and this electric ukulele are very similar.

String gauges in the 15 - 16 lbs each range for a total of about 65 lbs are: 9.5-14-22w-34. Mandolin tuning GDAE.

    Best of luck,
    Huck

I'm mainly a violinist and violin scale is 13 inches so I think it might suit...

    Gold Tone recommends about 20 lbs per string: .011 .016 .026w .040w

Just out of curiosity, I looked for the gauges for the Seagull Steel Ukulele replacement strings, and saw that the set is labeled "Titanium Tenor," with re-entrant GCEA stringing of .029 .041 .033 .029 low to high.

    https://godinguitars.com/product/sea...uke-hd-strings

I had previously wondered if this could support being tuned down to mandola CGDA, but if the stringing already starts at .029 for that starting A5, that low strings would have to be pretty thick to get down to the C.

Am I reading that right? .029 for the A5 course at a short mandolin scale seems pretty excessive. I would have thought a standard set of single-course mandolin strings would have worked...

If I am understanding the question correctly.

Mandola tuning (CGDA) at 13.8" scale length would require: 15-22p-38w-54w string gauges for 74 lbs total - around 18 lbs each string.

I have my CGDA on an EM 150 Gibson with a Magnetic pickup, so the windings on 3 are nickel ..

    Displacement.. C in 4th string position G where 3rd string was D , D moves A to 1st string..

It does take care of the weak E string signal by the E being not there.. string notches are made a bit wider for each ..

that uses a soundboard vibration sensing pickup, probably Piezoelectric.. so bronze wound will be OK..

tapered pin bridge, you can buy guitar singles..
