    Default D'Addario Monel sets

Does anyone know if the unwrapped strings are the same strings as the EJ series? I think the Monel only refers to the wrapped strings. The reason I'm asking is while I like the Monel strings so far, I'm missing the 11.5 and 16 sizes for the E and A courses I typically get with the custom medium set.

You might consider the Curt Mangan set where those gauges are available:

I tend to agree and think the Monel material is only used on the wrapped strings.

The 11.5 and 16 would be great to have on the Daddario Monel sets. I have been using Daddario Monels(not the Sam B. gauges) for a good while now.

As has been mentioned Curt Mangan does offer a Monel set in the custom medium gauges.

I am currently playing the Mangans. They are very nice strings. I will continue to use them until Daddario offers a set with the heavier plains.

I need to try the Mangans. I’ve been using the D’Addario Nickel Bronze custom medium set with the heavier treble strings. Close enough to monel for me.

The Nickel Bronze were really good on the Monteleone, I did not care for them on the Gilchrist. The Monels, I really like, but I'd like a little more pop on the A and E on the model 5. The top on that instrument really responds to the heavier treble strings.

Monels are wonderful on my MT and the D’Addario’s are excellent. I have wanted to try the Mangan’s for a while! Dan

Currently have the Mangan Monel custom mediums on my Derrington F5. My favorite strings on that Mando.
Those strings and a full-contact bridge are a good combo on it.

For me, Mangan and D'Addario Monel strings have not only a preferred tone but a very nice feel as well. Could be both a tactile and chemistry thing,IDK.

The fact that they are not coated and last a long time is just gravy.

I've wondered about this for a while, and once contacted both D'addario and DR strings about this. Both replied back that across their string lines, the plain (unwrapped) strings are all the same metallurgically. The only difference would be that some plain strings are coated. The metal alloy used is the same for your A and E strings whether they come from a set of phosphor bronze, 80/20, monel, etc. Remember there are very few music wire manufacturers in the country (and world) and all the string makers are using the same are very near the same music wire.

Basically, a plain string is a plain string is a plain string, regardless of brand or wound string composition.

I just recently put on a set of Curt Mangan monels and I really like them so far. I would say as good as D'addario.
What I really like is the "custom medium" gauges which I had grown to prefer when using Nickel bronze.

And they put my buddy Gabriel Wiseman on the package

Just put a set of the Same Bush gauge on my Sparks F. It had EXP75, and I was worried that 3 of the 4 strings being lighter would make it sound thinner. The Sparks is clearly a better instrument than I'm used to, as it still sounds great but is a lot easier to play. I'm going to order a set for the F-5, as well.

The wire used for plain, unwrapped strings is made by only a few companies.
Mount Joy & Mapes are two.

+1 on the Curt Mangan vs. D'Addario monels. I tried both on a Gibson Jam Master A and preferred the Mangans. Tone seemed a bit more complex and they felt nicer to my fingers.

There's also a Martin set available but I found those to be quite a bit less enjoyable to play and listen to than either the Mangan or D'Addario sets. I didn't like the Martin set much.

Mangan > D'Addario >> Martin for monel strings in my experience.

    Enjoy!

I’ll give the CM set a shot sometime. I tried his PB strings on guitar and mandolin, liked both a lot.

I have been liking the D'Addario Monel strings on my Girouard F-5. I am going to be getting a James tailpiece with "Girouard" engraved in it from Max this week, so I will be changing the strings along with the tailpiece.
I want to try the Curt Mangan Monel strings and found the best price from this vendor...

Anybody have any experience with them?
