    In the 1000-1200 range I would throw Howard Morris up in Oregon in the mix. $995 gets you a new A-style and the $1,200 gets you a 2 point. I think his building has slowed down due to current world events, but he has posted in the classifeds here recently. Great 100% handmade mandolins. He doesn't do binding or fancy inlay, but the tone and build quality are there in spades.

    I had both models when I started playing. I regard the KM-150 as a good beginner mandolin, and the MD305 as student level instrument. I noticed significant improvement in tone, neck action, and build quality. I also got almost all my original cost on resale.
    Being right is overrated. Doing right is what matters.
