Default Something I'll remember for the rest of my life

I was talking to a band mate the other day. This is how our conversation went.

Did I tell you about my teacher?

Oh, yes many times. He's very famous. A world renowned performer and highly regarded instructor. Right?

Yes. He has taught all of the best performers. He has been on a radio program for many years. Everyone knows him.

And you have been a student of his for a while now?
Yes, I suppose it has been about ten years now.

    So how is it going?

He said something the other day that I will remember for the rest of my life.

No kidding? Really? What did he say that made such a large impression.

    He said. You suck!

There is an old adage that goes:

An aspiring classical guitarist once participated in a master class with Segovia. Whereupon, after the aspirer played, Maestro chastised him severely, saying: "Your playing is utterly without feeling, your technique is among the worst I've ever seen; it seems you are torturing the instrument and the ears of any who are unfortunate enough to hear you. My recommendation to you, sir, is to put down the instrument immediately and take up another hobby!"

The next day, the chastised player had new business cards printed: Guitar Lessons Offered; taught by STUDENT OF SEGOVIA.

Brandon Marsalis had something to say about that as well.

The reason I stopped playing bass was my teacher threw a fit and not only said he would prevent me from ever getting into any professional orchestra, but he would make it his duty to make sure I was not allowed in a community orchestra. (Besides being in the local orchestra, he was also the union steward. He could back it up if he chose to do so.)

Criticism is one thing. Abuse is something else. But will admit I'm overly sensitive when it comes to taking abuse.

A guy asked David Grier at an IBMA workshop why he could not play as well as David. David says "That's because you suck...........but that's ok because we all suck. We just suck on a different level."

He went on to explain "It takes thousands of years of hours to play like this". Bryan Sutton was also at the workshop and he teased David all night about "the thousands of years of hours".

Keith Yoder says he has two kinds of students. They either are really good and think they are not or they really, really suck and think they are the greatest ever.

Bobby Osborne told the story: A fellow walked up to Bill and was banging his mandolin right in front of him. He asked Bill what he thought. Monroe said, "Hmm. Give me that mandolin!"

Monroe played the mandolin a few licks, handed it back, and said, "Well ... it's not the mandolin."
