    Default Strap Recommendation

New mandolin forum member. I've had a mandolin for a few months and just started getting serious about playing. My mandolin is an inexpensive (cheap) Rogue F style. Looking for some recommendations for a good strap.... know nothing about mandolins! Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

One idea is to make your own. I went to a craft store and got an inexpensive book on leather braiding. Bought some different colored leather strips, thin, and braided them into a strap. It was fun and a learning experience. Good luck and welcome to our wild, wacky world.

Thanks Denny! Appreciate the info. Since I'm just getting into mandolin I could use all the advice I can get! Been playing guitar for many years, have several guitars (10) but know nothing about mandolins.

A leather bootlace is probably the cheapest strap around. A good number of the pickers you'll run into at jams are just using that. I just make my own straps using leather straps but there are commercial straps out there. Check out the Classifieds here.

Check out the Long Hollow Softy. I bought quite a few straps trying to find the right one. The Long Hollow Softy was definitely the right one for me! There are many past discussions about it here on the forums.

Thanks everyone for the advice and recommendations. Also appreciate everyone taking it easy on the newbie with a dumb question. An instrument strap is pretty basic and straightforward but getting sage advice will help us newbies get off on a good start and focus on learning to play the mandolin. Going to order a brown or tan softy. Thanks!

But now and then, some of us will provide dumb answers.

Welcome to the Mandolin Cafe, Tele56!

My strap is a braided leather belt I had laying around. I hope you enjoy your Softy!

Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions. The Softy arrived and so far it is working out great! Now all I have to do is learn to how to play the mandolin. I appreciate everyone taking it easy on the newbie...especially regarding something as simple as a strap. Been playing guitar for quite a while and went through an extensive learning curve on everything gear related (including straps!).
