    Default Northfield Calhoun

Check out the Northfield Calhoun classified if you haven't already done so. Nice little mandolin!

If I were thinking about buying my first mando, or graduating from one of those $150 starter instruments, or getting one for my kid, I would so jump on this. Or a mandolin to take camping or whatever.

Under $800 (without case). I thought they were attaching pick guards to the faces of these, but apparently that was either something else or they've changed the design, which is good, IMHO.

Here's a video of Emory playing the bejebbers out of one.

Here's Simon Dunson playing his. For those not familiar, Simon is an amazing young jazz player who I think is going to be making big waves in the mandolin world in the future. He's a student at New England Conservatory of Music and drops really mind blowing solos on Instagram, typically transcriptions from famous jazz players, horns, guitars, you name it. Seems to really be crafting his own path.

Posting this using the Cafe's custom Instagram video sharing BB Code. Info on that here.

You can choose between two different pick guards, one stuck to the top or a floating one. You can also order an arm rest.

I played one back to back with a Waterloo. The Waterloo was better, but not nearly twice the cost better. We live in a great time of affordable instruments.

I ordered a Calhoun from Elderly back in January. It's got a beautiful flat-top tone. It's a keeper for me.

According to the Northfield website, the pickguard has the option of either a adhered type or elevated.

I’ve only heard a couple of recordings of the Northfield and the Waterloo, never played either, but I like the tone from the Northfield much better. And, the Waterloo is $1000 more expensive.

It seems like Northfield has spent a lot of time and effort in producing cases for their F styles but continue to totally ignore this problem. Personally, I will not consider buying one until this is resolved
