Thread: Informal Poll

  1. #1

    Default Informal Poll

I’m curious, let’s go back to our mindsets of a month ago, everything more or less peachy. Who would buy a $10,000 mandolin? Not necessarily have the means to, but would. Not I already have, I’m trying to gauge what percent of prospective buyers are at the level compared to say, five thousand. 10%? 20%?

    First vote. Not me.

Go ahead and say I would if I had the money. That counts, alas, as a no.

I have a $7000. My want is around $12000 and up for used. Probably never going to happen. But if I had the money I would.

I would have paid $5k for a Gibson Sam Bush then as I would now. Bonus points if it's signed by Derrington or Harvey!

That remains the only f-model that I'd like. (Closet fan boy from decades ago!)

I'll never spend that much for a mandolin just because I am not a performer. There are a lot of wonderful instruments of great tone that are appropriate for my "hobby/passion" . That said, I can lust after such mandolins.

I'm saving right now for essentially that, but it's going to take a while. There's two reasons:
    1. My primary instrument is aging-the top is sinking and I'm worried about its long-term stability.
    2. My playing and my music career (more of a side-job) is getting to the point where I've been told I ought to have a really great instrument. I've also kind of outgrown my ~$3-4k instrument. It took 15 years of playing, gigging, and lots of practice for me to get to that point, though.
    My Instruments:
    Ellis Twin Point #524
    My beloved Old Wave #83
    Herb Taylor Bouzouki #228
    Mid-Mo M1 #4321 and M14 #176 (my first mandos)
    Scuderi #001 OM Model Guitar
Plus a fiddle, a viola, a cello, another guitar, and (worryingly) three bagpipes.

Actually an interesting question. I would spend it on a Heiden A model.
But have no peace at home.
And, I actually have two really nice mandolins: an older Gibson A and a Fletcher Brock A, which I am really happy with.

I have paid more than that for an Ellis F5 several years ago ! Just bought a $6500. Girouard F4. People have money for what they want , maybe not need but want ! Renters have money for their cigs, booze and dog food but may have a hard time paying their rent. Priorities usually prevail !

I think "headstock envy" likely refers to the name of the maker. Not to be confused with "scroll envy."

Me, $5K is probably about the most I would ever pay.
