Do the clamp-on external jacks I see on A and F mandolins work on resonator mandos, too?
Thanks!

A lot of reso's have a screw in end pin. It can be located there. If it is metal and has ff holes Another option is to make a plastic washer (pick guard material) and use the circle of the f hole with a 90 degree plug.

Sorry Charlie, I read resonator and thought guitar. I think that would work on a reso mandolin. They usually use a mandola chin rest clamp and it should go out that far. Haven't played a reso mandolin in a few years and can't remember how thick they are. I measured a couple mandolins and 2" would be common. Are your reso sides deeper than that?

I had one of those on my old Ibanez - ‘bout 25 years ago, attached to a Fishman pickup. Problem was that it kept dropping off.
The problem was that the top/bottom of the Ibanez met the sides at 90 degrees whereas most of my other mandolins have a slight dish in the top which holds better. If your resonator is anything like mine, an RM-1, the edges of the top might be heavily curved and the carpenter jack won’t hold.
