Default I want to hear more about the story behind this one...

NFI - just updating my spreadsheet of tens and twenties Gibsons for sale, and came across this line in a description:

"Hardshell case has a bullet hole through it. Lucky the bullet did not hit the mandolin."

Here's the listing. I wish I knew the story of that one! https://reverb.com/item/28944010-gib...-a2-1921-brown

Bad night at the Dew Drop Inn.
That might make a good song title.

Clarence White's D-28 has [or had] a hole in it from a bb gun. If I remember correctly, Clarence or Roland put it there themselves.

And not a word about whether it was lucky it did not hit the mandolinist.

I can't believe that the seller didn't provide a photo of the bullet hole. I would buy it just for that, though i also suspect that the mandolin sounds quite nice.

Imagine the description Stan Jay could have written if he had sold it a decade plus later.

I bet we don’t have to imagine. Someone must have that issue of Mandolin Brothers newsletter. Hey, it could have been me. I may even have it but it might take me too long to find it. Maybe his kids still have it.

I would love to read that listing, if it's still around!

There was a Gibson A on Reverb this morning (a little on the high $ side) with a hole drilled in the back, because the original owner supposedly would screw it to the wall at the gas station he worked at while he was pumping gas. I love those weird stories about instruments. Here's a shot with the hole in it:

Odd as it sounds, I've heard stories of bullet holes through guitars and cases MORE than once in my 55+ years of playing. Must be a common target for revenge. I've also heard wives/girlfriends destroying guitars in response to a spouses bad behavior -- kinda like the famous "fire poker" story.....

Maybe not common, but common enough, it seems!

I remember an anecdote, heard long ago, about repairs to the internal braces of a Gibson acoustic guitar, which had come loose after an enraged spouse had urinated into it, to punish her unfaithful musician husband. Guess it's better to be "p***ed off" than "p***ed on"....
