    Bought an old Swedish Levin. Dismantling for crack repair and find the strings have felt slugs fixed just above the looped ends. Is this common for mandolin strings? Can they still be obtained nowadays?

    I remember guitar strings like that gradually dying out in the 1960s and suspect that the ones you have are ready to be changed!

    I like chenille strings. With some kinds of tailpiece they look and work better than those silly grommets.
