Happy Birthday Mr. B. Thanks for all the excellent music. R/
I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...
Norman needs to be declared a National Treasure. In addition to his prodigious picking, the songs that he has collected, saved and kept alive are rare glimpses into the history of Americana.
Peace
Son!
But Amsterdam was always good for grieving
And London never fails to leave me blue
And Paris never was my kinda town
So I walked around with the Ft. Worth Blues
Love everything Norman does. Truly a National Treasure. If you have heard the Mike Compton and Norman Blake CD "Gallop to Georgia", you should get it. Norman doesn't take any leads on it, but it's such a cool down-home recording. Compton's playing is really tasty on it too.

I bought several of Norman Blake's albums back in the early 1980's. "Full Moon on the Farm" was one of them. This is one of my favorite albums. Norman is a National Treasure. His rhythm and playing style is flawless and instantly recognizable. Tony Rice is such a treasure as well. HAPPY BIRTHDAY NORMAN BLAKE!!!

Gene Summers - Likewise Full Moon on the Farm ( along with the David Grisman Rounder Album) are the two records that started me playing the mandolin!

Norman literally changed my life from almost the first note I heard on "The Essential Norman Blake." I'd never heard anything like it, and instantly knew I wanted to chase after it. Going on two decades later I'm still obsessed with it.
Yes, Norman is in a league of his own. I first came across him on that first Will The Circle Be Unbroken album put together with all those amazing singers and players by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. By all accounts, Johnny Cash requested he go along and look after Mother Maybelle during the recording sessions, which from memory was back in late 1971. Norman is just a national musical treasure- he is the "jewel in the crown".
I want to call him a musical genius - but I’ll just say Norman is a wonderfully musical human being. I’m still totally enamored with Nancy & Norman’s recorded music. Today I’ve been slowing down and having a close listen to his phrasing, trying to learn his version of Cattle In The Cane from the latter part of his medley on Directions, and just wishing I could play with a fraction of his ease and taste. One of my heroes.

Another one who considers him a hero. His flatpick guitar style was a serious influence on my guitar playing. As was his mandolin playing.
But to me his biggest influence was and is his rhythm playing. So fluid and easy, but so correct. Never will be able to hold a candle to his playing.
